ROBIN HAD WASTED more than just her minute. She’d also blown a great opportunity to help Jake see reason. She had forty-eight fertile hours left. But, judging by his bullheaded attitude, she wasn’t going to make much use of them. She shook a packet of sugar into her steaming teacup at the Fireweed Café.

What was it they said? You could lead a horse to water, but you couldn’t make him drink. Well, she’d more than led Jake to water last night. If he still didn’t want to drink, there wasn’t much more she could do.

She’d have to head back to Toronto on Monday and think about finding another father for her child. The thought depressed her. Now that she’d pictured their children, she didn’t want anyone but Jake.

Maybe if she gave him a day to think about it he’d change his mind. Maybe once he’d had a chance to calm down a bit, and really think about all that she could offer a baby, he’d agree to help her have one.

For now, given his volatile mood, the best thing she could do was to stay out of his way for the next twenty-four hours.

“I’ll take tea, too,” Annie called cheerfully to the waitress as she plunked down across from Robin in the booth. “The helium tank and balloons will be on today’s flight,” Annie reported.

“That’s great.” Robin mustered an enthusiastic smile. The party decorations were going to be fantastic. She’d focus on Grandma’s party for the rest of the day. And if Jake hadn’t changed his mind by tomorrow…well, that was his choice. It wouldn’t be the end of the world, just a really big disappointment.

The bell above the glass door tinkled as Derek and Jake walked in.

“Hey, Robin. Hi, Annie.” Derek navigated his way around the café tables and slipped into the booth, next to Annie. Jake hesitated beside the table. He peered down at Robin as if she were a coiled snake.

Good grief, she wasn’t about to ravish him in the middle of the café.

“The van der Pols absolutely loved you.” Derek grinned at Robin as he signaled to the waitress.

“Coffee, Derek? Jake?” The waitress set Annie’s tea down, looking expectantly at the two men.

“Sure,” Jake replied somewhat fatalistically, folding his big body to perch on the very edge of the bench. He flipped over the stoneware mug.

“Bring me a burger,” said Derek, turning his own cup so the waitress could fill it. “You had lunch yet, ladies?”

Robin nodded. “Tea’s fine for me.”

“I’m good, too,” said Annie.

Robin glanced from Annie to Derek and back again. If their dance last night had spurred a romance, they weren’t showing it. They seemed perfectly relaxed sitting next to one another—rather like old friends.

“Anything for you, Jake?” asked the waitress.

“No thanks.” His deep voice was tight with tension.

“You sick, buddy?” asked Derek.

“Just not hungry.” Jake’s fingers drummed on the tabletop, and Robin could feel the vibration from his foot tapping on the floor.

His hostility was getting ridiculous. He was practically hanging off his end of the bench.
