ROBIN HAD WASTED more than just her minute. Sheâd also blown a great opportunity to help Jake see reason. She had forty-eight fertile hours left. But, judging by his bullheaded attitude, she wasnât going to make much use of them. She shook a packet of sugar into her steaming teacup at the Fireweed Café.
What was it they said? You could lead a horse to water, but you couldnât make him drink. Well, sheâd more than led Jake to water last night. If he still didnât want to drink, there wasnât much more she could do.
Sheâd have to head back to Toronto on Monday and think about finding another father for her child. The thought depressed her. Now that sheâd pictured their children, she didnât want anyone but Jake.
Maybe if she gave him a day to think about it heâd change his mind. Maybe once heâd had a chance to calm down a bit, and really think about all that she could offer a baby, heâd agree to help her have one.
For now, given his volatile mood, the best thing she could do was to stay out of his way for the next twenty-four hours.
âIâll take tea, too,â Annie called cheerfully to the waitress as she plunked down across from Robin in the booth. âThe helium tank and balloons will be on todayâs flight,â Annie reported.
âThatâs great.â Robin mustered an enthusiastic smile. The party decorations were going to be fantastic. Sheâd focus on Grandmaâs party for the rest of the day. And if Jake hadnât changed his mind by tomorrowâ¦well, that was his choice. It wouldnât be the end of the world, just a really big disappointment.
The bell above the glass door tinkled as Derek and Jake walked in.
âHey, Robin. Hi, Annie.â Derek navigated his way around the café tables and slipped into the booth, next to Annie. Jake hesitated beside the table. He peered down at Robin as if she were a coiled snake.
Good grief, she wasnât about to ravish him in the middle of the café.
âThe van der Pols absolutely loved you.â Derek grinned at Robin as he signaled to the waitress.
âCoffee, Derek? Jake?â The waitress set Annieâs tea down, looking expectantly at the two men.
âSure,â Jake replied somewhat fatalistically, folding his big body to perch on the very edge of the bench. He flipped over the stoneware mug.
âBring me a burger,â said Derek, turning his own cup so the waitress could fill it. âYou had lunch yet, ladies?â
Robin nodded. âTeaâs fine for me.â
âIâm good, too,â said Annie.
Robin glanced from Annie to Derek and back again. If their dance last night had spurred a romance, they werenât showing it. They seemed perfectly relaxed sitting next to one anotherârather like old friends.
âAnything for you, Jake?â asked the waitress.
âNo thanks.â His deep voice was tight with tension.
âYou sick, buddy?â asked Derek.
âJust not hungry.â Jakeâs fingers drummed on the tabletop, and Robin could feel the vibration from his foot tapping on the floor.
His hostility was getting ridiculous. He was practically hanging off his end of the bench.
